My artwork installed and ready for “Out of the Hills” exhibition

I was delighted and chuffed to be approached by mixed media artist Maggie Davies earlier this year and be asked to participate in a new venture called ” Out of the Hills” Marches art exhibition to be held at the revamped gallery within the Aardvark Bookery complex. Exhibition space at Aardvark books

My interactions with Maggie on Twitter encouraged her to consider me as part of this eclectic mix of artisans – social media has proven a useful tool on this occasion. Time consuming but the only real way to get my work out in the open.

The exhibition runs until Sunday 17th and I will be stewarding on the afternoons of  June 4th, 6th, 9th and 16th so hope to see you there……

Excited to have three exhibitions of my artwork this year….all are welcome!

Although last year was busy with commission work, and this year has started off in he same vein, it is good to be able to exhibit my pastel artwork in a range of different locations. This also increases the number of people who see my art and who can appreciate how much I pay attention to detail.

My first exhibition is at Aardvark Books in Brampton Bryan where I have been invited to join 12 other artisans in displaying artwork from June 2nd to 17th 2018. More details to follow……

Art exhibition

My next one will be at home here in Wigmore during H-art ( Herefordshire art ) week which runs from September 8th to 16th 2018, every day 10am to 5pm. As in previous years I will have original pastel artworks, cards, mugs and prints for sale. Our garden will be open for the NGS on the final day Sunday September 16th….hope to see you!

Collage art and garden

My last exhibition for the year will be at the Leominster Tourist Office Gallery which is a wonderful light and airy space in Corn Square in Leominster, Herefordshire. This will run from December 1st until December 24th 2018, just in time for Christmas! I will have a range of more Christmas themed detailed artworks with cards, mugs and prints available. So an exciting year ahead – hope to see you sometime in 2018!

My latest video, the creation of “Cheeky Chappy” in pastel

This is my latest video showing how I create my detailed pastel artwork of a robin. The start is a bit blurred but it improves!

I have often been asked to share how I create my artwork and started a Facebook page called Pastel work in Progress for this purpose. There you will see that I started with individual photos, then collages, and now videos. I am still refining my video techniques so any constructive criticism would be much appreciated!

For those artists of you, the materials for this artwork are Rembrandt soft pastels, with Derwent, Cretacolour and Conte pastel pencils on pastelmat paper.

I worked from a photograph my wife took, giving it depth, vibrancy and a 3D effect. I have used a polystyrene foam stick for blending the more detailed areas and my fingers for larger areas. The sandpaper and blade are used to create a sharp point that allows me to create fine detail that adds the extra dimension to the image. As with most of my artwork, this took 25 to 30 hours to complete.

I hope you find this video of interest. If you have any questions please feel free to ask me! “Cheeky chappy” is currently for sale at Sable and Hogg gallery in Brecon, Wales…….
